Oxford Boarding | Rye St Antony

Rye St Antony

Rye’s 12 acres of beautiful grounds a mile to the north east of the centre of Oxford give the setting for a boarding and day community of 400 pupils, some who board throughout each term, some who board just during the week and others who board for individual nights at a time. Oxford is a cosmopolitan city, and this is reflected in the school community, pupils coming not only from the local area but from all over the world.

Younger girls board in The Croft, a rambling Victorian house built by Alfred Waterhouse and offering the charm of its handsome architecture alongside the convenience of its modern facilities. Year 11 and Sixth Form board in the 40 single study-bedrooms of The Cottage, originally the cottage to The Croft and now a four-wing two-storey house built around a tranquil courtyard garden.

The weekday and weekend programme of clubs and activities gives scope for girls to develop talents and enthusiasms in individual and team sports, music, drama, art, design and ceramics, film-making, school journalism, debating and public speaking and the diverse activities of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Some clubs, for example the juggling club, are of recent origin, others are well established, and there is always scope not just to support an existing club or society but to found a new one. Evening prep provides regular times for independent study, with the help of staff and fellow pupils to call upon if needed. There are regular visits to London and elsewhere, for example to see theatre, dance and sports events, and Oxford offers a wide and busy programme of interests and activities close to home.

A spirit of mutual trust and friendliness permeates the boarding community, and boarding enables girls to develop their talents and interests in a happy, safe and stimulating environment. Boarding at Rye helps girls learn to understand and respect one another, it helps them learn initiative and independence, and it gives them opportunities to play their part fully in the school community and thus learn to contribute to future communities to which they will belong.
